A lesson by @LesleyMunro4  that looks at the cattle industry for American West. The Lesson includes a recap starter and a number of worksheets and tasks to help them understand the narrative question.

A - B Starter

A recap starter where students have to answer questions to get from A to B but are challenged to pass through as many colours as possible. Coloured section could have different topics or question types challenging chronology, defining key words and explaining.

Learning Postcard

This Learning Postcard by @Jmosley_history is  great resource to use as a homework to get students to recap and practice their oracy.

Catchphrase Recap

Students answer the questions on the corresponding work sheet and then recap as a class answering the questions and clicking on them to reveal sections of a picture  until someone can guess what the source or picture behind is about

It's a Knock Out Starter

Lesson: What can the music of Bob Dylan reveal about the 1950's?

This lesson looks at what was happening to African Americans in the 1950's focusing on the murder of Emmett Till. The lesson is based around the song by Bob Dylan. Students learn about the events of the murder and analyse the song lyrics. Students then complete a GCSE styled question. There is a model answer as well as sentence starters. Students are challenged to compare the lives of African American in the 50's with what they have learn about the 1920's.

The "Help Sheet" is at the end of the powerpoint and can be printed 9 slides to a page and the lyrics printed separately.

3 America Knowledge Quilts

A great resource to get students to recap and consolidate their knowledge about an entire topic. Read more about the resource in its feature in our T&L Times or @KKNTeachLearn blog about the resource. Fill the grid with key words from an entire topic and give students categories that they must sort the key words into by colour coding them. There is a a quilt for 1920's and  1930s America as well as one for Civil Rights and the Women's Movement.

America Emoji Revision

This activity was created as a revision activity and is a great way to start a revision session as it gets students testing each other. Students roll their dice to choose which emoji they need to link in someway to something they have learnt about e.g the Beer could be linked to Prohibition or the dancing woman to flappers in the 1920s. Elizabethan England Emoji Revision

This activity was created as a revision activity and is a great way to start a revision session as it gets students testing each other. Students roll their dice to choose which emoji they need to link in someway to something they have learnt about e.g the baby could be linked to the succession crisis or the ship exploration of the New World. Speak Like a Historians Template

This starter idea originally came from @KKNTeachLearn and @Jennnnnn_x, students work with the person next to them and use the words in the grid to answer the question verbally. Students score points for certain words they use and loose points for using banned words. The addition of scores helps add that competitive element. I added in a literacy column to embed particular phrases. The main aim of this starter is to get students to "speak like a historian" and build up oracy in the classroom, and hopefully have this translate into their writing, as many students write how they speak.  I would then choose a few students to have a go in front of the class and correct any misconceptions and through questions get them to expand and get students model a good answer.

"Health and the People" Guess Who

This idea originally came from @sehartsmith. Key people from an entire topic are added to a grid.

Students then take turns asking them questions to remove potential people from their grid. For medicine it could be “were they from the Medieval period?” or “did they help to improve surgery?”.  Once students think they know who it is they can say the name of the person and explain who they were and what they did.

If you Laminate the sheets they can be reused with whiteboard pens which can be used to cross out people off and wiped off each game.

Class Loyalty Card Template

A great resource for use in challenging classrooms as spotlighted by Tom Rogers' article for TES (read about other ideas here). Every student in the class is given a loyalty card and gets a stamp or reward for every good bit of behavior that is seen, once students complete a row they get a reward. A positive phone call for many children doesn't happen and is a great final reward. This card has helped many a teachers with difficult classes and usually resulted in immediate and noticable changes in behavior. Let us know how it works for you, we would love a tweet of in action.

Emoji Review

A great activity to get students to recap and revise a topic in history. Print the emoji grids off onto paper or sticker paper. Printing 9 slides to a page works perfectly. Students stick the emoji review sheet into their books and annotate the images linking them to the topic they have been studying. Students have to think about what they have learnt. Students can then be challenged to make links between the different points they make. For example for a topic on the USA, the Beer would link to Prohibition and students would then describe prohibition. For medicine through time the slot machine may represent the factor of luck and students would then explain how luck impacted medicine. It had been made to allow for a wide scope of topics but you can easily switch and change some of the emojis to make it more relevant.

Be the Teacher Homework

If you are stuck for homework ideas why not get students to teach somebody at home. Print two sheets to a page and give each student a copy, they then have to go home and explain to someone at home what they have been learning about in class, they then get that person write a summary about what has been told to them. Another positive is it also helps build up a dialogue with home and lots of parents like to hear what they have been doing in lesson.

Revision Clock Template

The Revision Clock is a great way to get students to revise a topic. To create a revision clock all you have to do is divide a topic into twelve sections with headings for each. Students then have 5 minutes to fill each sections with key facts, people, events and details relevant to the heading. You could also adapt it so that they have 2 minutes on their own, 2 minutes to look through their book and then 1 minute with the person next to them. These are great for lessons and homework, as students end up with a detailed sheet for revision and planning wise they are quick and simple to do.

This was created to recap an entire unit. Each property is a particular topic, there is one question to buy the topic and subsequent questions for the other people who land on it. If they fail to answer the “land on question” the price is doubled. Let the student choose the costs of the topic properties, the harder topics can be made more expensive. Laminate the board and resources.

Medicine Bookmarks

A set of revision bookmarks that covers medieval to Modern day medicine. You can use these as prompts during revision lessons and get students to discuss what is missing and expand on the key people.
